White Paper – People Simulation for BIM and Infrastructure

People simulation assists in decision making for planners, designers/architects and owners, by modelling the built environment through calibrating multiple objectives and functional alternatives.

In this white paper, Building Information Modelling (BIM) is considered in the context of trip simulation. This enhances designs by allowing for rapid comparison and evaluation of functional alternatives, and an ability to search the problem space for solutions that optimise a site for both users and the built form.

The standard usage of the time dimension in BIM is to simulate the construction of a design, so logistics and schedules can be visualised and optimised.

People simulation models the user experience within a design so the effectiveness of various options can be calibrated from the user’s point of view, as well as the impact of the design on the surrounding area. This is particularly relevant for the early stages of a project, where nano simulation adds an extra dimension of reality to the concept, and an opportunity to test the project performance from the user perspective.

The combined effect of evacuations, commuter journeys, traffic modelling, building function, and door to door economics is also considered. By modelling a real-life process or system by computer simulation, it can be studied to see how the system works, particularly where closed-form analytical solutions are not possible. Continual graphical computer simulations further provide the benefit of visualisation of the system as it changes over time.
