In this case study (PDF), Andrew Milford, Managing Director of ReziCAD, and winner of A2K Technologies’ Ultimate Desk competition, explains why he chose Autodesk’s Building Design Suite Premium, and the benefits to his business of Revit customisations from A2K.
Autodesk Revit Customisation
CAD software is not always intended to work ‘out of the box’ for all usage requirements, and this is where A2K Technologies’ expertise is proving invaluable to ReziCAD, following a move to Autodesk’s Building Design Suite Premium.
As with most businesses, it all comes down to improving time savings for ReziCAD, so they can focus on drafting.
Andrew Milford, ReziCAD’s Managing Director, said, “We needed some customisation to make Revit work a little easier and do what we want, especially in the area of dimensioning”.
“If we can spend some money to save us some time later on, I’m more than happy to spend money on custom software or custom parts for Revit to get it to work.”
A2K Technologies offers a number of ways to meet customers’ needs with software such as Revit, including customisation of the software, user training, and other tools such as Tools4Revit, which ReziCAD are currently trialling to address their dimensioning requirements. Tools4Revit allows quick and easy detailing and documenting of Revit Architecture, Revit MEP and Revit Structure designs.
ReziCAD have also subscribed to A2K’s Design Content library, which provides 2D and 3D models and materials, which are accurate representations of manufacturers’ products from Australia and New Zealand, for easy use within Revit.
ReziCAD wins the Ultimate Desk
In October 2014, A2K Technologies drew the winner for the Ultimate Desk competition, worth $25,000
It was the move to Building Design Suite that led to ReziCAD going in the draw for, and ultimately winning, A2K’s Ultimate Desk.
“Lucky as hell!” is how Milford felt when he found out the company had won the Ultimate Desk.
The prize components have now been distributed throughout ReziCAD and co-owned and directed businesses, Axis Planning, and Axis Surveys – with one exception. “I took the bar fridge home and it’s now got pride of place outside my back patio,” says Milford.
It was a need to update technology that prompted ReziCAD’s move to Building Design Suite.
“We needed to upgrade some of our technology to be compatible with the latest Windows upgrades”, said Milford.
“We also employed a drafter who’s been using Revit for about eight years, and that was a fairly big push for why we went for Building Design Suite with Revit, instead of any of the alternatives.
“I was referred to A2K by a builder when I was first looking into updating our drafting software. He’d tried Revit and already bought it from A2K, so it was useful to be able to have a positive recommendation from his first-hand experience.”
3D renders are an increasingly important part of ReziCAD’s business, with these now an expectation in the marketplace. “But the software we were using previously was nowhere near as good at renders and walkthroughs,” said Milford.
Having previously relied on an external consultant to perform renders, ReziCAD will now be able to move some of this work in-house with Revit.
ReziCAD offer a complete design and drafting service, including preparation of working drawings for construction and can also coordinate the necessary consultants to fully document building projects from start to finish.
